Elaine McArdle's Visit

http://blog.syracuse.com/shelflife/2007/08/journalist.jpg

Based on Elaine McArdle's visit to Watertown High School yesterday, please discuss what you learned from her lecture about being a journalist and her experiences in journalism.

Please answer questions such as:
Could you ever see yourself being a journalist? Why? Why not?
What are some of the stories she talked about?
Why did she make a comparison between being a lawyer and being a journalist?
Why didn't she want to be a lawyer?
If you were a journalist, what kind of articles would you write? Sports? Politics? Fashion?

*** Is all journalism mass communications? What kind of journalism might be a form of mass communications?

No I could not see myself being a journalist because I just don't like writing that much and even if I did I like fiction stories instead of non fiction.

She talked about that boy who got shot from that private school after graduating and going back to NY. He got shot because he was one of the biggest drug dealers around. Also the story of her writing about the best and worst lawyers in Boston and how one of them sent her tickets to the celtics vs. lakers game

Because they both most of the time have to tell the truth and are telling stories of other peoples lives whether its the life that they're protecting or just writing about.

Because she loved journalism more, she liked writing about the stories more than being apart of them.

If I were a journalist I would write about sports.

No because some are local, others are just for yourself, and some are mass communication that get around to everyone.

A journalist for a newspaper company or a massive magazine, and or for news companies such as like CNN or ESPN, etc.

I could not really see myself being a journalist. From what Elaine McArdle said, a journalist would have to be very passionate about what they are writing about, and I don't see myself being that passionate about what I write.
One of the stories she told was about a journalist who was reporting about a kid who had been murdered, and could not find out why. The journalist questioned many, many people, and could not find an answer. As he was about to give up his search, he interviewed one last person. That person told him that the boy who had been murdered was a drug dealer. This answered his question, and shows that perseverance in journalism is crucial.
Elaine McArdle made the comparison between journalism and being a lawyer because it shows that one should choose a life not based on how much money they you would make, but what you enjoy doing most. She didn't want to be a lawyer simply because she didn't like it, and enjoyed journalism more.
If I were a journalist, I would probably write about music. I have no musical abilities whatsoever, so I guess I would write about it so feel that much more connected to music.

I might could see myself being a journalist because I write a lot and i also write rhymes because I rap and freestyle.

Elaine McArdle wanted to work for Rolling Stone.

She also didn't want to be a lawyer dealing with a lot of cases.

If I was a journalist I would write about rappers daily and what they are going to do next in their career. Also new songs they are going to produce.

Mass Communications is related to journalism because you write and its compared to communicating with people.

no.

she talked about being a journalist and how at first she didn't know she wanted to be a journalist.

she said that she preferred being a journalist than a lawyer not for the money, but for the love of it.

if I were a journalist, I would write about sports especially soccer because it's the biggest sport in the world.

not all journalism is considered to be mass communications. Interviewing one on one could be a form of mass comm.

I could probably see myself being a journalist someday because i do like writing and expressing my ideas and thats what journalist do.
Elaine McArdle talked about how she didn't like being a lawyer and when she decided to switch careers everyone was telling her that she shouldn't and that she can't become a journalist. She didn't like being a lawyer because she felt it wasn't for her.
If i were a journalist I would like to write about sports because sports seem to capture readers the most.

She talked about how she went to law school because everyone was telling her she wouldn't make it as a journalist. She made the comparison about being a lawyer and a journalist because being a journalist is what she wanted to do and not be a lawyer. She didn't want to be a lawyer because she didn't love doing it. If I was a journalist I would write about music because I love music. I think that all journalism is mass communications. One type of journalism of mass communications is interviewing people and writing about them.

Elaine McArdle is great at what she does but I think journalism is not for me . I'm not a very good writer and she seemed to be very into her work . I just could not see myself doing that .

She talked this boy who went to a prep school in Andover and how he was very smart and got a scholarship to Princeton but like a few months before graduation he was killed .

She liked journalism( made her happy) more than being a layer even though being a lawyer had its benefits .

If I was a journalist,My articles would be about music and fashion

I cant see myself being a journalist because its not something that interests me. Even though writing is fun for me - its not something that i would do as a job. I don't write everyday, so i wouldn't enjoy that job.

she talked about some of the experiences she had that she had to interview people for her story - like the brother of a murder victim who was stabbed by her own husband. She also talked about the period that she was a lawyer, and it was interesting.

she made a comparison because she wanted to show us the differences in peoples lives/the way they work to provide for themselves. like, she mentioned salaries, which are important to people.

she loved writing and journalism, and she didn't want to work under a corporate company anymore.

i would write about fashion and celebrities because they would be the topics i would most be interested about and would enjoy writing about.

it matters on what type of journalist you are - for the local paper, or a main TV station or popular magazine.

I do not see myself ever becoming a journalist, mostly because I don't enjoy to write as much as a journalist should.

Although hearing what a journalist is, from her point of view, was a new look at journalists. She spoke of her career as a lawyer and how she didn't like it. The problem was that she felt that she was hurting people more than helping them. These two career paths relate because with the knowledge of once being a lawyer, she has special insight on certain articles that she's working on. Plus, journalism fulfilled her dream of helping people in which law, did not.

As a journalist I would prefer to write sports articles just because I love most sports out there.

I think that not all journalism is mass communication. One type is interviewing people and then creating an article based off of that.

No, i would never be a journalist because i find writing boring and I wouldn't want to get thrown out of somewhere. One story was when she was sitting by the river for lunch and a cute guy walked by with his dog and when the dog came over to her he said come here Rover leave the nice police lady alone. She made the comparison between a lawyer and a journalist because when she was a lawyer she hated it. Even though she made alot of money she didn't like being a lawyer and she's always wanted to write so she decided to try and become a journalist. She didn't want to be a lawyer because it was really boring, and you had to go though alot of paperwork each day. I would write articles about either animal story's or most likely sports, mainly because i love sports. No, not ll kinds of journalism are mass communications. And example is the Watertown tab is definitely not mass communications. But some like news reporters are because when they give the info to the news station it gets broadcasted to a certain city or state. A form of journalism that could be mass communications is news reporters/ news stations

I'm not sure if i'd want to be a journalist; i love to write but i prefer fiction. If i was really interested in the story, i guess so. But i was worried about how she said journalism is a harder profession to get into now because the newspapers are losing money. So by the time I'm picking a career, it probably wouldn't be the best choice. If i was a journalist i would write about a mixture of topics, as long as i found them interesting and thought everyone should know about them. I love fashion, so I'd definitely write about that, among other things. Elaine talked about many stories. The most intense was one about the wives of men who rape their children. She also did a story about a serial killer. But she also had sports story, and other
lighter topics. She compared being a lawyer to being a journalist to contrast a more serious and a mare creative job. She chose journalism because she preferred being creative and having some free time. And she wanted to do what makes her happy. Journalism is a form of mass communication, if the story is published in a newspaper or magazine or on a website that will reach a lot of people.

Some things I learned about Elaine McArdle was she loves to be a writer and a journalist, she has been doing her job or 20 years. Elaine has also won a number of awards for her articles. An example of an award she got would be "Excellence in Law-Related Journalism". Elaine takes writing seriously because she said it takes a critical role in democracy. She graduated from Centenary College of Louisiana and Vanderbilt University Law School. She now writes for many different papers and magazines.

Elaine Mcardle is a corporation lawyer turned journalist/author. Once realizing being a boring corporation lawyer isn't what she wanted to do with her life, she dropped everything and begged for a spot as a journalist for a Connecticut newspaper.

I can definitley see becoming a journalist in my future, but only to a certain extent. I am a very opinionated person, and to be a journalist it seems as though one must remain indifferent, presenting more facts than actual opinions.

I would really enjoy getting into the minds of people who society has branded "dangerous" or, "insane," to see what they are really like. Her stories of interviewing creeps and sickos sounded interesting. I could imagine myself interviewing those types of people.

My only question to her is this, are there ever any times where you wished you were still a lawyer?

Yes I could see myself being a journalist because I am quite interested in writing. Although I write a lot I don't know whether I would take that career as I am interested in some other fields as well.

I was interested in any almost all the stories she talked about. There were stories of her talking with the families were a murder had taken place, in sports fields, with formal NY major and many other stories where she was was surprise to notice that people actually want to share their ideas to someone, until they trust the journalist.

She said that Lawyer was all about money and work. She didn't say that being a lawyer is bad, she just said that she was not interest in working hard all time just for money and not get involved with the world.

If I were a journalist then I would probably write about some other aspects as I am not interested in politics, fashion and sports. But I would find something.....
(although I am pretty sure I wouldn't be a journalist)

Journalism is a form of mass communication. It could be when a journalist interviews someone and write about it. In that way, a person shows his idea to the whole world, which is a form of mass communication. Newspaper could be a form of mass communication.
