Extra Credit: Holding Prom on a School Night

April 13, 2010

While reading the N.Y Times I stumbled through an article that I found very interesting. It was about this high school in Manhattan that was trying to demote underage drinking and usage of drugs by holding the prom on a school night.

Holding Prom on a School Night

It's a tradition for teenagers to hit the Manhattan clubs or make a road trip to the Jersey Shore after prom. Pearl River High School has scheduled this year’s junior and senior proms for school nights. And the morning after each one, the principal and the Parent Teacher Association will be waiting at the school door: anyone not there by 7:34 a.m. sharp will be unable to make up academic work or participate in sports events that day. They are trying to demote alcohol and drug usage for minors after prom. Parents and educators across the country have tried for years to wrest control of after-prom traditions, using measures like sleepovers in school gyms, no-alcohol pledges and proms scheduled for the night before graduation, unfortunately non of those methods really worked.

Nonetheless, students threatened a boycott and circulated a petition calling for the proms to be moved back to Fridays. They protested that they were being punished for the bad behavior of a few. Some parents also criticized the school for interfering with their right to decide what was best for their children, they felt as if the school was calling them irresponsible parents that can't take care of their own children and know what they will be doing.

Personally I too would boycott the prom. I would get the whole student body to plan their own prom their own way in the day desired. By doing that no one could really control what they wanted for theme, the day, the location or the timing.

“Honestly, it just seems pointless,” said Bridget Mathis, 16, who planned to skip her junior prom, scheduled for Wednesday. When you’re thinking about having a good time, you’re not thinking of going out on a Wednesday night.”

Growing up online

In my mass communication class, we were recently at a website called  http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/kidsonline/view/. This website was about how now a days we all same to be growing up online. One way I can relate to this would be how my three year old cousin is always on the internet watching videos on youtube such as music videos for kids and barbie video clips. Yet thats just right now, soon she would probably be using it for many other things  such as facebook to chat with friends. I'd say that we all have grown up online, by the fact that when we want to get information we just use the internet to get it, such as back in the day we would have to go to the library and check out a book on the topic we wanted to know about. As in today we can just go to google and other resource websites and search the topic and in seconds we have all the information we wanted to know. I don't know if I call that cheating like some teachers and students did on the videos I recently watched but I do agree that the internet does make our life's a little easier. But in some cases like students used so they would not have to read a book and yet in minutes know everything they needed to know about a  book using the internet I guess I would call that cheating after all.  The internet has become a very big part of us all and I can tell because every now and then when my internet is not working I end up missing it more then I usually think I would. The internet can be very helpful and useful but if we don't know how to use it the right way it can also be very upsetting. From watching the videos I noticed how many of us all have our own way of using the internet but not all ways are appropriate. I noticed how some people used the internet to be different or to even be themselves without people making fun of them. I noticed by watching these videos that some moms are overly protected about there children and tries her best to know about there every move, like how a mom placed the family computer in the kitchen to always know what her kids are up to. Well I learned quite a lot from watching these videos and I do agree with what people had said about using the internet and how there are many right ways and wrong ways of using it.

Growing Up Online

In our Whs media class we ave been asked to watch something from Frontline. The Video is called "Growing up online." Upon watching most of it i have seen, and heard that much of what these teens have gone through, and seen online, is not much different from what i've seen. In the part titled "Private Worlds Outside Parents' Reach?" I found that a girl named Sara sort of had two different lives. Online she claims to be he true self, and in school she claims that's she is very shy and not very outgoing. Another example i saw of this was an earlier part in which a group of girls were trash talking another group of girls. You may think that they would have said these words to each others faces, but NO these girls admit ed that they wouldn't say anything to the other girls faces. All of the pent up anger resulted in a brutal fight which left a chair thrown, and 13 girls suspended from school. Witnesses of the fight claim to have seen others whipping out cellphones, and recording the fight. Sara also brought up how she felt at home on the Internet she felt that she could be herself, and no one would make fun of her for it. Sometimes this can be dangerous, and people can take advantage of someone who is feeling vulnerable.

Something that I found interesting was how some of the teens interviewed seemed to think that anything they saw on the Internet was true. I myself used to think this, but the reality is that anyone who is tech savvy, or even someone not, can post a blog, website, email, text message, or social networking page with false information in it. Sara has an eating disorder. She goes to a site called "Thinsperation." This website makes Sara feel good about her disorder, and in fact makes her want to become more skinny which is very unhealthy. On this site Sara likes to find neat little tricks to Binge, and starve, and purge to keep herself thin.

According to Frontline the lure of the Internet is seductive, and powerful because it is such a good listener. This to me is very true which is why sometimes it is hard to get off. It is also true that you may feel very comfortable with the Internet, and post something very edgy or pornographic. You never know who you could offed, or who saw this post/text/email/blog that you may not have wanted to see it. "It's been said that the Internet has created the biggest generation gap since the advent of rock and roll." This quote from the movie really stood out to me, and made me think of my grandparents and great grandparent who aways ask me what I'm doing down there at the dinner table. When i would try to explain they would often just say NEVER MIND. My grandmother on the other hand is a little more tech savvy. Working with computer used to be her job. She had a normal flip cellphone until recently when i helped her look for a phone that worked well with E-mail. She got a blackberry not 6 weeks ago, and is now face booking, E-mailing, and texting. She even has herself a separate ring tone for Me(Shots - Lmfao), My mom (Super massive black hole), and her husband (some jazz song). She is now "in the loop," and she likes to be up to date with lots of Tech and stuff like that, but she still has trouble wit texting back right away.

Another big problem on the ever growing Internet is Cyberbullying. There are kids out there that are so insecure that they will start a fight online, and talk nasty and say threatening things, but ten when it comes to saying things to peoples faces they will just give you some sort of dirty look. A man interviewed in Frontline was talking about his son. His son had asked him ho to fight, and his father taught him. It was not yet apparent, however, that his son was being VICIOUSLY Cyberbullyed. He couldn't take anymore of it, and he commited suicide, because these boys at school were just so intolerant and nasty. One person being interviewed said "Ya know if your getting bullied it ends at the schoolyard." In this case thoiugh i couldn't end. He went home, and went online to socialize with his friends. He was just caught in this crossfire of bullying i which he was never safe at home nor school. A popular girl in school thought that it was funny to flirt with boys in her gade only to trick them later, and say it was all a lie. She often did this, and upset many people.

My own experiences with the cyber world include some hurtful words that have been said to me, and sometimes i even say a few back. Cyberbullying is very upsetting, and REALLY gives you this feeling of being trapped. In the 7th grade i made a myspace. I lived in Brighton mass, and went to a very small school. I had always been bullied since Bullying was introduced to a child. Instantly i Had friend requests from people i used to know people i did know, and people i didnt know at all. I was smart online. i didnt talk to people i wasnt sure about, and i also tried not o give my password to any sites i wasn sure about. One thing that was not good though was bullying. I was bullied for a long time By two people. They upset me in the words they said making holocust references, and black jokes. At some point i felt like there was no escaping this bullying. i started to hurt myself as a way to make the pain of bullying seem meaningless. As I continued more, and more with hurting myself i felt like i wanted more. towards the end of my 7th grade year, and 8th grade year I tried multiple times to commit suicide with substances. As my friends have told me there is no point in doing such things because now you can easily cut people off fromm your online world, and they dont need to be part of it. I believe that if you try hard enough you can make sure the bullying ends at the schoolyard.

P.s im all better now.

And here is something that has happened more recently.

Growing up online

As a kid I have always had access to the internet. Play games, look up stuff, things that kept me busy. I never got deeply engulfed with the computer as the kids in growing up online did. They made it an essential part of their life. Without it they wouldn't know what to do with themselves. I haven't made it crucial to my online life. If I lost the internet for a while, it wouldn't bother me too much. But it would affect the GUO (Growing Up Online) kids a lot. They don't seem to have anything else to do. I haven't really grown online. I have a facebook but I only check it once in a while. I don't even check my e-mail that often. Is using the internet a detriment to our learning? Yes and no. Yes because students can cheat, get wrong info, use shortcuts, etc. No because computer interaction keeps students interested, they pay attention, and they interested in working.

growing up online

In my intro to media class,we went to this website that had a video talking about growing up online at
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/kidsonline/view/

I relate to this video because the internet has a big impact on my life and I can spent hours without realising it, this is a big disadvantage for me though because I lost parts in the day that I could be more productive. For me I was introduced to the internet, when I was nine years old,I thought it was the best thing that man created and began to explore I was hooked from then. There is a teacher in this program called Steve Maher who says if you didnt have the internet "it would be like walking into a desert" on many levels I agree with him, the internet has a great part to play in my education because most lessons are either inspired by or copied from the net, some topics which are here are here because of someone researched at thought hey, this should be added to the syllabus and it was.

One of the people that I can relate to from this is Sara, she talks about her up and down issues with weight I know how she feels because I have had problems with my weight too, but not as seriously because she went to a website that actually tells you how to remain or becaome thin, I personally found that annoying because the media has already done so much to destroy the self esteem's of girls by producing 'role models' that are to anorexic, and harder to copy forcing little girls to starve themselves, just so they can look like them.

Rosa Porpora has been teaching for 3 decades, she's a teacher of english featured in this as well, she commented that its very hard for kids to concentrate nowadays because they are too used to the fastestness of the internet, I disagree hownever, I have been using the internet ten plus years and my concentration has not gone down, I think that it has improved actually.Evan Skinner is also from this documentary, I found very obsessive with her fear of the internet, she went as far as to ask for the passwords to her kids facebook accounts, that is equvalent to reading a diary it was too personnal ansd I do not blame her kids for saying no,I would not give my parents the passwords either and to me, she did not respect her kids by asking for it, I think they can make their own decisions as to who they want to view their accounts.

It was a good learning experience to see how other kids have lived online and I learned alot of lessons on the dangers of the internet.

Tragedy of Misused Technology

Our WHS media class has been watching videos about growing up online. The PBS FRONTLINE is a program made to alert parents and youths using the Internet. I myself, love using the computer. I’ve grown up with easy Internet access and it never really gave me a problem. I use it for researches, homework, play games and interact in online social sites such as facebook. I believe that the Internet is a tool that if you know how to handle it, it’s beneficial. It wasn't originally created to cause trouble, but to make peoples life easier.

The program started out pretty simply, they were interviewing teachers, parents and students about what they think about teenagers growing up online. The interview happened at Chatham High School, Chatham, New Jersey. Some teachers were talking about the beneficial of technology and the Internet and how many students pay more closely attention and actually participate in class if it’s online. "It's like we have to become entertainers" a teacher said. Some teachers think that the Internet only brought cheating and made the students life easier, as if they were going through high school without really learning. "I'm being quite frank when I say I haven't read one book in all my high school years..... I use Spark-notes." They are pretty much insulting their brains. "I don't have time, if the day had 27 hours then I would read, but it doesn't it only had 24 so...” They are trying to blame not having time, but if the day did have 27 hours, they would use the extra 3 hours and find something else to do and then just blame on it again. Many old fashioned teachers that don’t really believe in technology believe that ADD increased now a day because people are so used to fast technology. Everything is fast, they can get anything in a matter of seconds, it’s on the tips of their fingers, and because of that they become less patient and get distracted much easily.

Everyone has their side to the story. Teenagers, of corse don't see the Internet as exactly bad. They say that it’s a place in which they can be themselves, can express their emotions without having to hide it from anyone. Some even say that its like having a fake side of you, the happy one the one that goes to school and is seen as perfect and happy and then the real you, with the pain and sufferings. Jessica used the Internet to build a new person, Autumn Edows. By taking almost pornographic pictures she started to have friends, she was always the loner, the ugly girl no one talked to and now she was seen differently by what she made herself. “It’s like a competition to see who can have the most friends.” A girl said.

Evan Skinner was a concern mother. Well all mothers are concern so you can call her incredibly overprotective. She was the type of mother that only allowed one computer in the house, and it had to be in the kitchen where she could see what they were doing. Not only had that she also wanted to even know her kids passwords. In my perspective that's just a little too much. I agree that you should check on your kids to see what they are doing and ask and all but hacking into their privacy is going a little overboard. She was way too involved in her children high school privacy, because of that her son told her that she ruined his high school career.

The story that mostly touched me was Ryan Halligan. He was a young boy with all his life ahead of him when bulling got a little out of control. I know that bulling is real; I know it happens everyday, but for the fact that a 12 year old boy killed himself because he couldn't handle it was horrific. The worse part in this story was that there was a deeply disturbed kid giving him wrong advices online, showing him websites on how to kill you. When the pain got too much to handle he did it. I think that if you don’t have anything useful to say then don’t.
The Internet can be used for so many beneficial things, to improve our lifestyle, to make our lives easier. The sad part is people don't know how to use something without ruining it.

Growing Up Online

After watching the documentary:

"Growing Up Online",

I learned many facts that i didn't even know of five minutes before watching it. I knew that many kids around the world have a computer that takes up a lot of their time, whether it's talking to friends on facebook, or just playing online games. Yet what I didn't know was how immensely addicted kids are to this fairly new technology. For example, Greg said the "If [he] were to disconnect, [he] would be at a loss", this shows how valuable computers and cell phones have become over the years.

I am also surprised at how teenagers are comfortable with letting out all that information about themselves online where anyone is capable of reading it. Unsurprisingly, I am not alone on that one, a woman featured on the video said "They don't realize that when they're sharing on that keyboard, it's like let 'em on in baby".

In my opinion, kids should be more informed about the consequences of sharing too much information on the internet such as cyber bullying, online predators... teenagers these days rely so much on the internet that they can't do many things without it. Like Greg said, "[he] can't remember the last [he] read a book", because sparknotes is now the shortcut to getting an A on a reading assignment.

Ultimately, chaos would overcome the human race if computers, cell phones, video games, or even just one of the many new technologies that currently dominate over traditional ways of spending our day were to vanish from the face of the Earth. The only way to control computer and video game addiction is by getting kids to go outside and appreciate the miracles of nature from an early age.

smoking and what it does to you.

In my intro to media class,we were told to look at the a few videos on the effects/ prevention of smoking which were created by teenagers from other schools as well as our own school from http://www.the84.com/. The video that i picked as my best is this one.

The Broken Dream - Boston Trinity Academy from The 84 on Vimeo.'>

The Broken Dream - Boston Trinity Academy from The 84 on Vimeo.

I like this one because it shows the effect that smoking causes on this young man who after searching for the reason why his life has become the way it it is, realises that its the cigaratte in his hand. Its not too late even for him but he realises how much time he has lost because of that cigaratte.

It is a hard lesson for him,but I like it because the video warns others to be wary of smoking, and see what can happen when you do in a simple to the point way.

The next video link is another one I like as well, its a rough around the edges but the message is clear enough to understand.http://vimeo.com/10236924 This video uses domino pieces to show how one pack of cigarattes can increase to the point of were it becomes addictive and stopping seems impossible. It tries to prevent the habit from getting worse by telling the audience to stop before its too late.

The last one is my least favorite video. It is very short but unlike the previous ones, its confusing the message got lost along the way, the use of the phrase "don't cry over spilled milk" was a good idea, but it was not put in a way that made sense to me.http://vimeo.com/10237001
The overall lesson is that smoking is bad for your body, it causes lung cancer and bronchitis

and other forms of heart disease, the best option if you haven't started yet is don't, the risks caused are too high and can lead to death.

In my media class we were watching some videos at the84.org on why we should not smoke. This video above is one of the videos I most enjoyed, mostly because its not really boring, and it also catches your attention very quickly and its also very funny. Another video I liked as well was one called  hello my name is reality, I really liked this video because its really realistic. It's also very sad as the girl talks about her mom who has recently died from lung cancer of smoking and how she misses her mom so much and now she knows that from her experiences with her mom she wouldn't smoke so she can have a longer,  healthier   and  happier life. My third favorite video was one called basketball smokers I liked this video because it was also very realistic and it really shows how people change from before they start smoking to after and how it affects them in sports. A video I didn't is a video called tobacco does that I thought it was bad because it didn't make even sense and it just was messy, and they didn't even give good information on why not to smoke.

The 84 percent that don't smoke video

In media class we are looking at some videos at the 84. The 84 is about 84% of teenagers that don't smoke. Here are some good and some bad videos.

My second favorite video is The 86.

I really enjoyed this video because it had a lot of people involved. It was kind of an interview, you saw teenagers telling us reasons on why not to smoke. You saw that there are teenagers out there that don't smoke and that actually care about their health. I liked the whole idea of a lot of people being involved, and the fact that they asked 86 people made it more interesting and accurate.

My third choice is How Far Would You Go
This video really made me laugh. To see how much a real friend would go through so that you could have a healthier like was very cool. I was laughing when the girl jumped the smoker as it being a reality call saying : what are you doing with your life!

The worse one that i found was Together We Can Make a Difference
I really didn't like this video. It didn't grab my attention in any way and it just made me want to change the video. The information was accurate and all but the acting and the scene in which they did it in was just plain boring.

Most interesting videos on "The 84"

For our class, we had to watch every video on the website "The 84." Our task was to decide which one of these videos was our favorite and which one we fount to be the most interesting of all.
My favorite: The 86

Weston High School's Story: The 86 from The 84 on Vimeo.

I liked this video because it was creative and fun to watch. I like the way the creators presented the video. For example, they gave some interesting facts about the number 86. The idea of having every person they interviewed write down their reason as to why they choose not to smoke. For example, they gave some interesting facts about the number 86.

These other two videos were my other favorites

The sacrifices of smoking
I liked this video because it was very clear, no metaphors or symbols, just straight to the point. They got their point across by showing the negative effects of smoking but in a dramatic way that made their argument even

Smoking is scary
I liked this video for different reasons; it didn't really inform the viewer how bad smoking is. The main reason that I found this video entertaining is because it wakes you up when you're bored, literally! The other reason I liked this video is because it was funny and creative.

However, this video is absolutely terrible!

Don't cry over spilled milk
This video did not capture my attention in any way, shape, or form at all; If anything, it made me sleepy. Overall, the video looks as if the kids who made did it in a couple of minutes for a passing grade.

The 8ighty 4our.

This is the video that I have decided to embed. This video is very realistic, and shows not the physical effects of smoking, but the side of smoking that you might not think about. Cigarettes cost about 8$ a pack these days. If you were to smoke 1 or 2 packs a day the accumulation would add up to anywhere from 2880$ a year, or even 5760$ a year. If you sit, and think about how much money that is then you will see how ridiculous smoking is. you could have your first motorcycle, or even a used car for that amount of money. The symbolism, in this video, of smoking your money away is very powerful. This video sends a very clear message that should not be ignored.

Smoke Yourself Broke - Lexington High School from The 84 on Vimeo.

The first video that i choose was the "The reality"

This video was very realistic, and saddening. It makes you think about how upsetting the effects of smoking are.

My second choice of video was "Somebodies Watching me".

This video is not very informative, but it is a very funny spoof of the Gieco commercials. It symbolizes that a big amount of people do not smoke, and do not enjoy being around other people who do smoke. Somebody is always watching you!

My third choice in video that i liked, and thought represented smoking in a negative way was "A side never seen." This was a funny video to me, but was also on the edge of just a bad video. i liked how they made the box seem like it was a real person. The box offered them a cigarette, but the boys declined because they knew better.

The video that I choose to be a bad representation is called "Cigs or your kids," from Holyoke High School. The video starts out with young boy sitting outside you cannot see him very well because the close up of him is too close, and blurry. The acting is awful, and when the "father" asks if the son ha been smoking the son says yes. The "Father then responds by saying "It's all good." I thought this did not reach across, and say something to me that would make me want to stop smoking. I would not give this video my vote.
