Frontline Video-The New Asylum

The New Asylum explores inside the Ohio prison system's treatment of the mentally ill. Many state run asylums have been closed and prisons all across the country have taken their place. While they discuss how it may not be the most effective way to treat the mentally ill, there are few other options for them. The documentary went through prisons and interviewed important people in the prison systems like Gary Beven, a chief forensic psychiatrist. In the video he describes the negative effect prison has on the mentally ill. Effects such as increased delusions, self mutilation, and rebelling against guards. Robert Bankston is a paranoid schizophrenic whom they showed during a psychotic break. He is shown being carried out of his cell by prison guards and resisting them. This shows that prison is not designed for the mentally ill and they need hospitals, and constant care.
I think this documentary was made to show the need for psychiatric hospitals because prisons are not designed for the mentally ill. From this video I learned the importance of the mentally ill taking their medication and how prisons can not cope with the growing number of mentally ill inmates. Many videos of patients were shown along with images of prisons they live in. There were interviews with members of the Ohio correctional facility, doctors, and officers involved in caring for the mentally ill.

I'm going to incorporate interviews in my own documentary as well as clips of whatever its on, background information. Overall this video was extremely informative on the treatment and handling of the mentally ill in American prison systems. There is need for change in how things are done but for the most part prison doesn't seem to bad.
